in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some lawmakers came forward and expressed interest in introducing legislation about gun control, but i guess the question is will they really in the new year? >> reporter: it really -- the reaction, especially and even among republicans to the nra idea is sort of muted at best. it's not a lot of enthusiasm on capitol hill for the idea of the federal government stepping in and endorsing the idea of all schools having armed police officers. never mind funding it. listen to a couple of senators, starting with a republican. >> we had an armed guard in columbine. we had an assault ban. none of it worked. we're talking about preventing mass murder from nontraditional criminals. people who are not traditional criminals, who are not wired right for some reason. >> since we passed the brady law, the assaults are down. we need to keep working on this, and there are lots of different solutions. >> just because the republicans may not be runn

the attorney general is set to head to newtown, connecticut, today after meeting with vice president joe biden at 1:00. but don't expect to see him. this is not a public event. the attorney general has scheduled to apparently meet with some of the law enforcement officials in that town and then also with some of the first responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people b

in the newtown shooting, they are actually invested in the private equity firm that owns some of the world's biggest gun manufacturers. as we reported after the aurora shooting this past spring, cerberus kappel owns the freedom group, the world's largest firearm distributor. the freedom group produces over half of all semi-automatic rifles sold every year including the one that was used in the newtown massacre. the california teacher a pension fund has about $751 million invested in the company that is responsible for that, cerberus. late yesterday a spokesman for the fund told the sacramento beat that the pension fund was considering pulling its investment out of cerberus, saying "events that occurred in connecticut are a wakeup call to re-examine our investments." the california teacher's pension fund has a lot of money for those investments. $155 billion overall to be exact. remember $751 million of that is with cerberus. so facing that kind of clout cerberus announced at 1:00 a.m. this morning that it would sell freedom grou

this is reported i thought was redundant, like saying president obama's speech in n newtown was a call to scripture and prayer. it wasn't what he was talking about but he referenced scripture and prayer. the first words out of his mouth, the lord is already near, come, let us adore him. it was a spiritual message. in the middle of the message he reflected on the traditional family which we know the church supports and has long supported. and defended. and he made glancing reference to our personal selfishness and said that's a threat to the family. people not wanting to make commitments. and therefore give of their time and their energy to have families in the first place. and then he made reference to this manipulation of nature. but he never mentioned gay marriage. he never mentioned gay people in there. so i think, you know, it is it was certainly one can interpret that was the focus of what he was talking about in that particular paragraph. but i think to characterize the whole message that way is reductive. he was calling all of us to task for various failings, in our personal lives, and i thi
